“The primary feature that distinguishes the FLHCF from other organizations bearing Mrs. Hamer's name is the fact that she died of cancer. After undergoing surgery (radical mastectomy) for late-stage breast cancer, Mrs. Hamer would stuff her bra with socks. On a subsequent speaking trip to Washington, D.C., Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton had her fitted with a prosthesis. Today, twenty-plus years later, the cancer experience of too many poor women mirrors that of Mrs. Hamer's.”
